Do you have a backup of the config? Assuming you're doing all this just to migrate to a new box why not use the backup config to build the new box or migrate? If you are going to fix it why not get the new working NPE and use the backup to rebuild? I'm not sure password hacking the broken one is worth it anymore. Also, if you boot it it may come back in an even worse state.
