I spent some time about 10 years ago, maybe more, writing a script that 
basically checked for backup files daily. Checks datestamps and minimum sizes. 
It's saved us on countless occasions. RTMT will do a good job telling you the 
backup has failed, but, if the backup process hangs, it's not going to do 
diddly. 

It makes me sleep at night. That's for sure.

More like weekly. Lately have seen a bug we’re the backups never finish they 
just start over and run forever.
