I think the problem is that the baud rate between the
modem and the console port are not matched, hence the
garbage. I've seen this happen before.
Computer -> 115200 -> modem -> PSTN (56k?) - > modem
-> (baud rate the modem is picking) -> console
The default baud rate on the console is 9600, so you
need to lock the DTE side of the modem to match.
Set the modem you want to use up on your PC, and use a
Hyperterminal session to the modem at the baud rate
you want to lock it at (e.i. 9600). I believe the
commands are &b1 to lock the DTE speed, and &w to
write the change. You might want to check the modem
docs.
Also, there are a few settings you will want to change
on the switches on the bottom of the modem. I don't
have one in front of me, but I know you want to turn
on autoanswer, and turn off echo and responses. You
don't want the modem sending ANYTHING to the router,
especially when it's booting. (I've forgot to disable
modem responses and ended up with the router at the
boot> prompt)
You don't need to do anything special on the router,
except set the console password. As far as the router
is sees it, it is the same as plugging in your laptop
to a console port.
I've done this on console ports before, so I know it
works, I may have the commands off a little though
Good luck, hope that helps.
