"Legacy", in the networking field, is one of those words you'll never find
defined anywhere, yet most people seem to know what it means. It took me a
couple of months to get a straight answer!
Basically, legacy equipment or technology is the stuff that used to be
state-of-the-art a LONG time ago, but is still hanging around because your
company has too much invested in it to replace it. So, you're stuck with
finding a way to make the old stuff interact with the new stuff. As an
example, where I work we have lots of newer technolgies like PCs, new Unix
stuff, Netware 5.1, Windows NT, windows 2000, fast and gigabit ethernet.
Now, at some point in time, those technologies must, in some fashion,
interact with an IBM mainframe, as well as IBM 3270-type terminals and
terminal controllers using SDLC. In that context, the latter would be
considered legacy.
Or, if you're in America, another synonym for legacy is "Monica." :-)
Sorry, I'm in an ornery mood....<g>
