My understanding is that "in the past", it was common to use map-lists.

However the "preferred" way now is to use sub-interfaces.  I had map-lists
throughout our large corporate lab just 6 months ago and then converted them
all to subs.

So, I don't think it's a matter of correctness, just a matter of choice.

Looking at the lab in the book - it is backed up by so much documentation
that it is difficult to imagine that it is "wrong".  Also, a difference in
IOS may be a factor, the lab says 11.2

But having said that I haven't tried it so I will have to try and get it
temporarily on a couple of routers.  All our ATM capable routers are in use
so I'd have to sneak something for about an hour and then restore
things.....................
