Turns out that if you turn off fast route switching (no ip route-cache), the router will do a packet by packet *round-robin* over available interfaces. I worked in one shop that did this but it's really not recommeded as it puts a large CPU load on the router.
Search cisco on ip route-cache and there are several documents on this. Like mentioned before you can do floating static routes. You can also use policy routing to balance packet types.
