Yes, Macintoshes remember their network.node from the previous boot. They 
store this in Parameter RAM (PRAM), which is non-volatile memory.

Could you send us the AppleTalk configuration on the router? Maybe the 
router is in discovery mode and doesn't really know the network number. 
Also some output from show commands. Here are some good ones:

show apple globals
show apple interface
show apple traffic

Some good debug commands are:

debug apple events
debug apple zip
debug apple errors

And I have to ask, are you sure the ODS hub is really hub? ;-) All symptoms 
point to the problem I mentioned with the Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) not 
forwarding traffic right away. You know when you try to buy a hub these 
days, vendors send you a switch. Of course, ODS is pretty old, so it may 
really be a hub.

Here's a test. What happens if you connect a Mac directly to the router 
with a cross-over cable and get the hub out of the picture?
