The CCNP switching exam tests you on commands for 2 different operating systems. They will have questions on configuring switches using IOS (similiar to routers) and CatOS (set based commands). The Cisco Press CCNP Switching guide will give examples of both. So I'd say don;t bother with any 1900 switches. The XL switches run IOS which you need to know anyway the non XL run CatOS. I'd say spend a little more money and get a 5000 series switch, it'll be able to do layer 3 with the rigth accesories. No XL swtiches do Layer 3.
