3/4 in plywood makes a pretty good base.. If you use *carriage* bolts, there will not be anything sticking down from the bottom. The smooth head is underneath and the nuts would be on top.
I would consider using that and then running a mount to the ceiling to help keep things from rocking back and forth too much. Another thought is to find something thats not too ugly but heavy to put on the outside edge of the plywood.
