The ONLY advantage of building the FrankenPIX is that you can put a 4+ FE Interface FW together for a fraction of the cost of a 515, 525, or bigger just to play with complex FW scenarios. If you don't have the pleasure of working for a Service Provider or other Data Center-like facility that has Cisco LAB access to things like that, you don't get to practice the scenarios that some job postings might "require"; how else are you supposed to get the hands-on experience without just having @$$ loads of cash to blow.
Of course, you obviously would have a few regular PIXen to work with and call cisco for support on for scenarios you get stuck/confused on... Disclaimer: I'm not supporting the premise that one should do this, I'm just stating the thought process that would be going through ones' mind if they were contemplating such an endeavor. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of Rick Sent: Friday, June 07, 2002 11:28 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: any good linux BGP simulator [7:46088] I always see people asking for Linux/Unix sims for BGP or just to simulate a router in General. I for the life of me can't figure out why a Linux router could be better than a 2501 and it would cost me more to build a Linux box. I see the same with wanting to build a PIX with a PC and you can get a 501 and possibly even a 506 cheaper than build it out of a PC?
