I think the real driving force for config sync was support for the flexwan and SRM is definately an improvment over config-sync. When the 6500 first came out and you had two MSFC's and a flexwan, if you lost an MSFC you would have to manually configure the 2nd MSFC serial/ATM ports, not good. Config-sync was a kludge to get around this until SRM was available. Config-sync gives you nothing two routers running HSRP in the same chassis doesn't give you except the goofy alt configs.
