I'm relatively new to SAN thinking, but I find a remarkable similarity between the description of SANs and the internal organization of a carrier-grade router. Both seem to have separate control processors that control interface processors connected to a high-speed crossbar (presumably optical or electronic-optical-electronic) switching fabric.
