A lot of formerly decent articles on wikipedia have degenerated. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_elevator is one of them. Go back to where it had the equations in the article to see how the current one has degenerated.
At some point in the history of a lot of Wikipedia articles is a point where they got attention from experts who have long given up trying to keep the article from constant churn.
