The way I see it, the cittern went through a lot of shapes and sizes, and tunings, one of them being a bell shape. It also got deeper over the years, and the string length changed along with tuning schemes. I see the history or, shall we say "development", of the instrument as part of a continuum, but a zig-zag continuum rather than a linear one.
