I know, and it's definitely a topic I'd love to learn more about.
I was referring to diatonic citterns, not to citterns in general. I've 
had the impression diatonic fretting was gradually replaced by chromatic 
towards the end of the 16th century and all but gone around 1700. Then 
again, even if my assumption is correct, I suppose there were plenty of 
old diatonic ones still in use well into the 1700s.
