I guess my Corsican is better than I'd thought.  I'd bet that a 16-
string cittern has 8 courses, which is fairly normal in Corsica..
What's the source? Have you had a look at or have you played through
the music?

Not yet. I have a hamburger cister on (long overdue) order, and would love 
to try the Corsican material when it finally gets made.
Have been a longtime corsophile, since I was 15.
