What Roland says is fair enough, it's just that the tuning I tried to  
lay out (not done very clearly I'm afraid) is what I saw most players  
using when I was in Corsica in June, and what they talked about as  
the traditional or standard tuning.  It's also the tuning Michele  
Raffaele (not spelled correctly I'm sure) uses, and what he says was  
pretty standard in times past.  I can't check any of this info at the  
moment because everything's in boxes as I get ready to move to France...

There was a guy named Carmine in Corsica using the D D A D G tuning  
(low to high) that Roland mentions.  D A D G (a tuning I use a lot,  
with a fifth course tuned to D, G or A, depending on the tune I'm  
playing) is what I use for Irish and medieval music.  It's actually  
similar to tunings used on sitar, sarod and other instruments from  
the east.  It's very good for melody.
