I'm afraid that was me and I was not thinking clearly. The question was wether the Portuguese guitar appeared in a country already familiar with citterns. What I had in mind was the other citterns commonly in use in Spain and Portugal today. However I don't know if any of these are any older than the Portuguese guitar.
