I've just received a little article written by Bernardu Pazzoni, "La cetera ou cetara", from Trad Mag number 108, July/August 2006, pp 36-7. In it he sites the 1696 reference to the Corsican cittern:
"Raffaele. Pieve di Moriani - 9/02/1696 'in questo carnevale si faccino delle mascarate e gioche col sono della cialamella, tamburi e altri instromenti. ... tener ne far balli; cosi in le piazze pubbliche che in le case ... con la caramusa, cetra, e altri instromenti. ... tanto nelle case quanto nelle publiche piazze, ne con caramusa, ne con cetra ... balli publici con la cetra.'" roughly: in this carnival there are masks and games, with them the [single reed instrument], drums and other instruments ... they hold dances in public squares and in houses. ... with the bagpipe, cittern and other instruments. a lot in houses and in public squares with the bagpipe or the cittern ... public dances with the cittern.
