How about Gold windings wrapped around a steel or brass core. Do you think that 
would work ?

Sure,  Kevin,
pure gold is not stable enough, that's right.  1g can be stretched to 1 km (!!) 
It is a question of alloying (melting in other materials)
And THAT will be a real task to find out, given Peter's calculation help
