Hmm, I'm not sure whether this version of pdfeTeX can handle Unicode
characters > U+FFFF.

This is clearly a bug in pdfeTeX.  Look at
http://sarovar.org/projects/pdftex/; there you can see that the
current stable version of pdftex is 1.30.6.  I suppose this bug has
been fixed meanwhile.

Anyway, I really don't recommend pdfTeX currently for documents which
include CJK fonts!  As far as I know, dvipdfmx produces documents
which are far smaller (with the additional benefit of proper
cut-and-paste support out of the box).
