Hmm, I'm not sure whether this version of pdfeTeX can handle Unicode characters > U+FFFF. > pdflatex: writettf.c:702: prepend_subset_tags: Assertion `index > 0 > && index < name_record_num && fm_cur->subset_tag != ((void *)0)' > failed. This is clearly a bug in pdfeTeX. Look at http://sarovar.org/projects/pdftex/; there you can see that the current stable version of pdftex is 1.30.6. I suppose this bug has been fixed meanwhile. Anyway, I really don't recommend pdfTeX currently for documents which include CJK fonts! As far as I know, dvipdfmx produces documents which are far smaller (with the additional benefit of proper cut-and-paste support out of the box).
