xdvi -debug -1 ...
as can be seen in the `Usage' message of xdvi.

Well, Danai showed you a recipe to solve it. It is not related to the
TeX input file but how the xdvi program interacts with X11. Check the
file
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults/XDvi
and control the font set definitions. Honestly, I have no idea what
to do.
