Thanks! Inspired by your hint, I posted on the "opensuse-m17n"-list, and
it was indeed Mike Fabian who replied.

For anyone who might be interested: The solution to my problem is as
follows:

What used to be

        \begin{CJK}{Bg5}{kai}

up to SuSE 10.2 has to be changed into

        \begin{CJK}{Bg5}{akab}

in SuSE 10.3. The reason for this change is explained in the
SuSE-specific documentation of the package texlive-cjk-latex-extras
(/usr/share/doc/packages/texlive-cjk-latex-extras/README.SuSE).
