> file and does some things in the /etc directory.Well, when you install latex-cjk-japanese-wadalab, a file "20latex-cjk-japanese-wadalab.cfg" will be put in /etc/texmf/updmap.d/. The file only contains the line "Map wadalab.map". If you, as user root, run "texhash", "update-updmap" and then "updmap-sys", then TeXlive will register all the fonts in "/usr/share/texmf/fonts/map/dvips/wadalab/wadalab.map". Run "update-updmap" and then "updmap-sys" again, because you have modified your wadalab.map file.
