OK, no problem to change this.

The font filename is dgjhw.sfd. Now, when I use the subfonts.pe script
to extract .pfb and .tfm subfont files under control of the
Unicode.sfd file, then what I get out is the dgjhwff.pfb/.tfm file,
since the characters are all in the 0xff range. So the subfont name
has the "ff" attached to it, but the font is called in latex using the
dgjhw name. It just doesn7t have any other characters in it. Now for
the other points you raised....

I have to study what to do here, since I am not yet very good at
tracing errors. I expected Unicode to be the natural way to encode;
you seem to prefer SJIS with a virtual font reencoding (which I also
need to study) for Unicode. So what about EUC as well then? Would that
also work via a different reencoding virtual font file?

I think I understand in principle, but I need to check some examples
to find out how to do this.

That would be very useful. I suppose I can hand-edit the .vf file. But
how is the .tfm file created? I only know how to do that with
fontforge using a particular encoding. Since I am starting out with a
.sfd file in Unicode mapping, I cannot directly output a .pfb file but
need to use the subfonts.pe script to split and output. Probably this
is the same if I choose SJIS encoding or something. I tried before
using "compact reencoding" but without success. suppose I need to
read the utility scripts in the CJK respository again. I can guess
that this will take me several days and then I will have questions
again about what I do not grok yet.
