Hey Dennis, I am doing the same time, and after some struggle came up
with a solution.
Here is a paragraph written in English, with a chinese character
inserted right in the middle of it:
Although Cantonese and Mandarin are quite different in tone,
Shanghainese is less of a different dialect. ``Shanghainese \begin{CJK}
{UTF8}{}\begin{SChinese}上海闲话\end{SChinese}\end{CJK}
(\PYactivate \Shang4\hai3 \xian2\hua4\PYdeactivate) is a dialect of
Wu spoken by about 15 million people in Shanghai.
There is a bunch of stuff at the beginning of the document but I
assume you have that. This is what works for me:

\PYdeactivate <<<<<--you have to turn it off to start with, and turn
it on ONLY when you need it.

Dennis, please note the following: The pinyin stuff must be turned on
and then turned off each time it is used. Otherwise, it interferes
with a lot of other stuff.
So you would say \PYactivate \zhuang4 \PYdeactivate and that would
give you the pinyin romanization with the 4th tone accent mark.
Also, if you are cutting and pasting chinese characters from the
Internet, be sure your browser is set for UTF-8 encoding, otherwise it
doesn't work.
