Sandra,

Thank you so much for providing us with this useful tool. Just last month I
had a the manager of a grocery store page for the owner of a black Honda
with a Dalmation inside. All the windows were up and the moon roof was
closed. Although it was about 4:30 in the afternoon, it was still about 78
degeees outside. When the young woman was "found", she wasn't all that
thrilled with me and protested that the moon roof was open all the way ---
she ALWAYS leaves it open ... It wasn't open and I politely let her know it!
Several people stopped me on the way out of the market to let me know how
great they thought it was that I had the owner paged and told her about the
danger she'd put her dog in. One man thought I should have called the
police (which, BTW, I would have done had I not been able to find the owner
of the car). I think these AKC Warning Posters are good to leave as
'reminders' when you see a dog in a car that DOES have some ventilation,
however, in the case of a truly dangerous situation, such as the one I
described, there is no substitiute for immediate ACTION - either tracking
down the owner or calling the police. People's ignorqance as to the
potential death trap a closed up vehicle on a hot day provides to children,
pets and the elderly is mind blowing!! This Summer in Southern California
alone, we have had at least five babies and/or toddlers die in parked cars
on hot days. Last year, a Police officer was tried and convicted for leaving
his partner, a German Sherpard,in his car for several hours on a warm day
resulting in his death. I must add that the officer was completely
devastated by his dog's death and was suffering more due to knowing it was
his fault than he could from any formal punishment that could be brought
upon him. I figure if it can happen to a trained officer of the law, it can
happen to any of us!! Again, Sandra, thank you for the timely reminder and
the nifty AKC Warning Posters!

All the best,
Susan
