I'm in California, and although I don't know the exact laws about this, I can
say that in 1983 I was stopped and ticketed when I was in college and had my
1 yr old cocker spaniel in my car. The police car was behind me and my
cocker poped up and watched him from one of the back seats, then apparently
(according to the officer) :) she went down, and popped up from the other
back seat! Then he pulled along side and voom! she popped up at the side
window...that's when he pulled me over.
I remember it was a ticket for something like "Unsafe Driving Conditions In
the Car" or something like that?? So if there is a ticket for that, there
must be one if the dog is loose in the back of a truck! I have seen dogs
restrained in the back of trucks, but even that is very rare... Mostly I see
work trucks and their dog is in the passenger seat next to them! I think the
office can use his discretion to pull over the vehicle.
I'm horrified to see any animals, or children etc. in the back of open
trucks.. it just looks so scary!
