Thanks so much for your response. It was very helpful. I am soon going to
have to pick my first show cavalier. The breeder is going to give me a
choice of the two she think are best. She said they are quite different
from
each other and she wants me to make the pick. While one has great markings
its a little straight in the front. The one with the best movement and
angulation has a little more white than she would like... etc. Thanks for
the advice.

------------------------------

When picking a puppy I would definitely go for construction and balance over
markings anytime Glen.

When assessing puppies I do observe them over the weeks and sort out those
who don't have the balance and soundness of construction i.e. have wide
fronts, lack length in upperarm, which makes them short stepping, those that
don't have good toplines, have croups too rounded of and hence bad tailsets,
lack in correct hindquarter angulation, are too hocky going away.

Then I look at head shape and size of eye. With my lines they do change a
lot but I find what is usually there at 8 weeks will be how they finish up
as mature adults. Teeth are a worry in our breed as the mouths can change so
much until maturity also, so puppies showing potential are run-on until
their second teeth come thru.

I consider that good markings are the icing on the cake and should only be
the final deciding factor between puppies if all others points are equal.

I also assess temperaments over this time and select the right homes for the
right dogs if possible.

Good luck with selecting you puppy - a lifetime choice.
