Sandra,

We Norfolk Terrier breeders in Colorado get as many calls as you all do and
if they are for companion puppies (pet quality) we have a little system going
that works very well. We all keep in touch through our local club and pretty
much know when everyone's dogs are in whelp. So, if we don't have a litter
planned or the prospective owners would rather not wait for ours, we refer
them to the Norfolk breeder who has puppies coming the soonest. Then that
breeder can refer them on down the line if need be. Most of us do not keep a
waiting list--it's kind of scary to anyway because so many things can go
wrong. We keep notes on people who are interested and try to find the best
puppy for that person or situation. It's worked out great so far. We also ask
them to fill out a puppy questionaire and visit us before we even bother to
keep that information. If they want show quality--we refer if they want us
to. Most times prospective show dog owners want a particular line.
I'm in that fix now looking for my show quality Cavalier and in speaking to
breeders whose lines strike my fancy I feel as if I am not such an outsider.
I've made many nice connections, made some friends along the way, have found
two mentors who are very generous with their information (not prejudiced) and
learned a heck of a lot about Cavaliers in general and in particular.
