Dear Myra,
Are these the plastic backed, absorbent pads that are used for bedfast
patients? If so, do the dogs ever chew on the plastic?
We used many of these pads with my mother-in-law who was incontinent for
several years prior to her death. I never thought of using them with a
litter due to the plastic backing. We use carpet remnants and keep these
changed frequently, discarding the used ones. My girls would tear the
incontinent pad to shreds and give it a good try with the carpet. A few days
after the birth, the nesting instinct finally stops and they relax. I use
shredded newspaper prior and during the whelping. It is fun for them to
shred, but messy, and easy to refresh after each baby is born.
Have you ever had a mom who carried the baby by picking it up by the head
and moving it around? We don't get these often, but I thought that LeeAnn
was never going to stop picking hers up this way this summer. My heart would
stop every time I saw her do this. It isn't any good to fuss at them, it
just makes them worse. We have found that ignoring this will allow the dam
to settle down and stop moving the babies like a cat. Their growth helps as
well as they become too big to pick up.
All the best,
Susan Cochran
