There are different ways to do it, I had a custom box made to fit a corner in
my bedroom. The cut out circle for the nest must be perfect. You must be near
a plug. There is a red light that goes on when the temp is correct so you
know all is well.
The Mom doesn't always lay in the nest, but quite often beside it, as she
gets to warm in it. The babies don't have any problem with the 1" difference,
and they do not get out of it, so it keeps them centered.
An incubator is also great for the babies to be in when you clean or take Mom
out to potty, as it keeps them the perfect temperature all around. It also
will save many chilled or fading pups. Wish I had had mine years ago.
Good luck all.
