Dear Listers,
The story of the Dallas SPCA's handling of the stolen Cavalier is so
horrifying that I'm now late for another commitment because I couldn't bear
to postpone a response. I've written in haste so eloquence had to take a
backseat to speed. I have no idea how many list-members will be able to
take the time to write -- so please forgive me if this is unnecessary -- but
I have pasted in (below) the letter I just emailed, in case it would help
anyone else start their own letter. I hope the Dallas SPCA will be
*deluged* with emails from the US and abroad.
Alida
Mr. Warren Cox, President
SPCA (Dallas, Texas)
Dear Mr. Cox:
I am writing in reference to the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel that was
stolen in Dallas on August 6, 2001.
The story about the Dallas SPCA's handling of this case is now being
circulated to email-lists with large national and international memberships.
(I am in New York.)
We have been informed that the Dallas SPCA refuses to contact the party
that adopted this dog in order to facilitate the dog's return to its
rightful (and heartbroken) owner. The SPCA went so far as to tell the owner
he should be happy his dog was with a loving family. THIS IS APPALLING.
Mr. Cox, if your child had been kidnapped, would you be satisfied to be
told only that you should be glad your child is now living with another
loving family? Would you resign yourself to the loss of your family member
just because the relevant authority claimed to have followed the "letter"
(though clearly not the spirit) of the law?
The SPCA may have been advised that it has not broken the law. But it
has taken a position which is in violation of fundamental moral and ethical
principles. Please instruct your organization to revise its position and
take immediate action to return this dog to its rightful owner.
Sincerely yours,
Alida Margolin
