I have two books that I find very good. They are different and
for me, serve different needs.

One is "Dog Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook" by Carlson and
Giffin. The other is "Complete Dog Care Manual" by Bruce Fogle.

The first is just what the title says. It tends to show and
describe major illnesses, and conditions. It gets into a good
bit of detail that in my view many dog owners might not want.
But I am a person who wants to know and understand. When a dog
is vomiting I want the list of X types of issues and how they are
sorted out (by smell, color, etc.) and which are do something now
and which are watch the dog because it might be the dog ate an
acorn or what ever.

The second book is in the ASPCA series and it has a very good
section on diagnosis of what to do. This section is a decision
tree which is very good at leading the pet owner to a result.
Also there are sections on dealing with and caring for ill dogs,
old dogs, how to pickup an injured dog, correcting bad habits,
etc.

I am sure there are many more. If you have time I would suggest
you go the your local library and look at some. Also if you have
a Barnes & Noble type book store they carry a good selection.
