Hi All,

Finally I feel safe enough to drop you all a quick line from NYC. My family
and friends are all accounted for, safe and sound. Phoebe is with me but
Willie is at the Vet. He has a cardiac arrhythmia and is being watched,
waiting for an echocardiogram tomorrow. The vets have all gone home to
their families and the techs are monitoring all who are hospitalized, under
the direction of the vets.

I thought about going over there to bring him home this morning, but if he
went into crisis I never would have gotten him to help fast enough. The
safest place for him to be is there, right now.

I was almost in my car on the road this morning when all hell broke loose. I
had enough food for Phoebe for quite a while. I went out at 10:00 to get
some cash, water, flashlight, kitchen matches, can opener, candles, and food
(I usually have such things on hand, but most of my things are still in
storage). Within ten minutes of getting to the grocery, water was quickly
disappearing, lines got long, and credit cards couldn't be processed (credit
cards were not a problem elsewhere though).

Came home and packed a knapsack of necessities and food and water for
Phoebe, just in case and put Phoebe's Sherpa and leash next to it. Spent
the next three hours tracking and accounting for family and friends.

The streets, at 9:00 this morning became very quiet, like an early Sunday
morning in the summer. For several hours, thousands of people could be seen
quietly walking north on the sidewalks and in the streets. Then more
commotion and a smattering of cars. Stores closed or never opened. I could
hear the fighter planes flying overhead until about 2:00. Now, the streets
are very quiet again, except for the roar of sirens.

I am hoping that everyone is safe and that no one has lost anyone dear to
them. My mother has been very calm through this whole thing. She is of a
generation that saw the likes of WWII and Pearl Harbor. My generation has
never felt physically threatened on home territory.

Hard to know if this is over at this point ... out lives are forever changed
by this ... personal physical safety is no longer a guarantee. We will go
to sleep at night not knowing what tomorrow will bring ...

Jayne, Willie and Phoebe
