HUMANE HERO: DOG GUIDES BLIND MAN DOWN 71 WTC FLOORS
Omar Eduardo Rivera was in his 71st floor office in the World Trade Center
last week when tragedy struck. The blind Colombian man could hear pieces of
glass falling, so he unleashed his guide dog, hoping that the golden
retriever would escape. But, as Rivera told Reporters, "The dog was very
nervous, and he ran off but came back and kept by my side. He didn't bark."
Instead, the animal companion led his caretaker to an emergency exit, where
both dog and Rivera's boss guided him down the stairs. "At first there was
panic, and some people tried to run and go first," explained Rivera. "But
most people behaved quite prudently and grasped what was happening, so we
walked down in an orderly fashion, but it was slow-going."
