Hi, Peggy,
I do think you are quite right in what you say, and I should amend or
correct impressions if I sounded as though I was saying something
different. FIRST and foremost I happen to be a great fan of the LOOK of
Caption and the fact that his descendents in some matings lived to be
old dogs is highly appealing. I know you would be the first to say that
breeding healthy dogs is important, but losing the type to health is
also a compromise. There are, I'm sure, a few dogs around with Caption
behind. (My own Timsar included). But the old style Homerbrent look is
hard to come by at least from what I see. How close would I like Caption
to be in my prospective pedigree? Well, first I wish I had had the
pleasure of knowing him first hand. As I said, I am handicapped (as are
many of us) by the fact that we can only rely on photos of great dogs as
we are novices. Offhand, however, I'd love to have owned one of his
kids!

That is not to say that I don't LOVE some of the Salador dogs and many
other lines. It was personal choice AND type AND health all of which
attracted me to the dog I chose. That is NOT to say that any kennel or
line has the corner on any of this. I am perfectly capable of having my
breath taken away by dogs I had never considered "my type".

And, while we are on the subject of health and lines, I am a firm
believer that MVD lurks in every line and that all the testing in the
world won't stop me or anyone else from getting it in our dogs some
day. I also believe that we are selecting very specifically now for
heart, eye, patella, hip and some even testing thyroid and other
things.....who knows what else for which we are inadvertently
selecting??? We could be combining for other inheritible diseases just
by doing this selection process.

So much of breeding is luck.......and patience and years of knowlege. I
can hope for the luck but must wait for the years.........

And, I am always open to new information should you feel like sharing!
