Hello, Mark,
        I have not had this email but am aware that many hospices and other
organizations who have benefited from pet therapy organizations wish to
have a dog on site. Most therapy organizations here have stringent
regulations about how pet therapy is administered and by whom. At the
nursing home where I do pet therapy with our qualified Cavalier, they
have requested a dog from "NEADS" which is an organization which will
place trained dogs in such places.......however, the requirements for a
"NEADS" dog also are somewhat stringent in that the dog must be the
responsibility of ONE person who feeds the dog, cares for grooming,
takes the dog home at night, etc. While I would be the first to attest
that animals greatly benefit all of us, and especially the ill and
elderly, much can go wrong if an animal is not trained or supervised.
OUR first responsibility when going in with therapy dogs is to our dogs;
we must make sure that they are not override, stressed in any way and
feel protected. This is why both Delta and TDI have programs in which
dogs can be trained by pet owners, breeders or therapists and owned by
them to be used in therapeutic situations.
        Once the benefits of animals is recognized in a hospital setting it is
then hard to dampen the enthusiasm for bringing them in
indiscriminately. Nurses want to bring in their pets for the patients;
we even had an activities director who hired an entertainment company to
bring in a monkey there. Therapy organizations frown on this, as those
animals are not vetted the way ours are vetted, (for temperament,
disease, etc) and the people who, with the best intentions in the world
bring them in to visit patients are not trained to handle the difficult
situations.
        For instance, in an elderly care facility there are many with
diminished mental capacity who would like to "keep" the dog for
themselves. We are trained (and so are the animals) to deal gently but
firmly with the patient who gets upset and won't surrender the animal
before it becomes a problem that is serious.
        While I can't say enough about therapy organizations, the simple
donation of animals to hospices, etc. without doing so under the
auspices of some organization which provides training for the animal and
the person who will care for it makes me very nervous.
