>The vet did not know why the antibiotics she was on did not work. My

What concerns me here is that the vet doesn't seem to have a clue. I would
expect any vet to know that various strains of bacteria are resistant to
various antibiotics. It is obvious to me that whatever bacteria the bitch
had was resistant to the antibiotics she was on. In addition, when blood
tests showed a high white count AND she had a discharge, the vet should have
been alerted that something was very wrong. This is not normal! Even if
the bitch was acting normal. Unfortunately, finding a "breeders vet" is not
easy. To me a "breeders vet" is one that has many years experience working
with good breeders and has knowledge based on extensive experience in this
arena. It is truely a specialty and not one offered in vet school.

Loosing a beloved dog is a heartwrenching tragedy. But loosing one because
one's vet was just not tuned in properly is even worse. It confirms my
belief that it is very important for dog owners, especially breeders, to arm
themselves with as much knowledge as possible. We cannot count on our vets
to know it all, especially in such a specialized area as breeding. Finding
a vet that will listen to you, work with you and treat you with respect for
your special knowledge is a wonderful experience. Unfortunately these
people are few and far between.
