Susan,
The problem was that my regular vet did not do bloodwork to find out that
the white blood cells were high. I told her about the discharge and she
said that was kind of normal. She put her on an antibiotic that she felt
would be okay for her and the puppies just in case there was a problem. It
was the vet at the emergency clinic where I took her on Thursday night that
ran the bloodwork. At that point I did not notice a discharge and her
surgery incision had healed. I did not feel that she should have taken so
long for everything to get back to normal. I felt things were not right but
assumed since she was on antibiotics she would be fine. I know now this is
not always the case. As you have said she had to have a strain of bacteria
that the antibiotics could not handle. The vet explained to me that they
don't do cultures because it takes about 10 days to get the results and by
then it could be too late. She said they use broad spectrum antibiotics
that cover a wide range of bacteria. In Susie's case it didn't work for
her. Yes, as breeders we must know and push when things don't seem right.
I felt like I had taken care of the problem if there was one when she was
put back on antibiotics. Thanks for all your kind thoughts.
