Hello Denise

I had a tri girl 'Rosie' who was diagnosed with leukaemia which I presume is
the same thing in the middle of May 1999. The glands on her neck were a bit
larger than a marble and we found them quite accidently when fondling her
neck. She had chemo jabs weekly for 8 weeks and then went onto tablets
thereafter. I kept her until the end of April 2000 and had to let her go as
she was suddenly in great discomfort. It virtually happened overnight. Up
until the last couple of months she was in good health but gradually got
slower as her liver and spleen enlarged. In all we had 11 1/2 months from
diagnosis. How long we would have had without any treatment I do not know
but guess it would have been a lot shorter. She did not suffer too greatly
with any side effects from the jabs. On 2 occasions, I think after the 2nd
and 4th one she vomited on and off for about 6 hours about 24 - 36 hours
after the jab. The rest of the time she was well. She only lost the minimal
amount of coat.

Later in the disease she did get crystals in her urine which resulted in
blood in the urine but this was treated with Hills Science Diet Sensitive
and it went away after 2 weeks, did return later but the diet sorted it out
again.

She was also given a Hills Diet for Cancer sufferers but she hated it as it
smelt like fishy cat food. It is supposed to help prolong life but as she
hated it so much there did not seem a lot of point.

The biggest problem in the later stages is incontinence but we got round
that by using a baby's disposable pull up and cut a hole in it for her tail.
She loved wearing it and was very proud showing off in front of the others
and holding her head up as if to say aren't you jealous, I have clothes. It
enabled her do to what she loved best and that was sit on our bed and on the
sofa in our lounge!

Hope your friend's young man gets as long as possible.

Regards

Subject: [CKCS-L] Lymphoma - Help For A Friend

Hi List-

I just spoke with a very good friend of mine whose mother owns an 8-year old
neutered male Cavalier. This dog was just diagnosed with lymphoma. My
friend has asked me to post to this list a request for any information
anyone
on this list may have in treating this type of cancer, as well as the
results
of the treatment. Her mom was told by her vet that it was treatable using
chemotherapy, with an 80% chance for a remission. However, my friend
wonders
how long such a remission would last to count towards part of this "success
rate."

I would appreciate any and all comments, with permission to forward to my
friend!

Thanks in advance for your help-
