Diane

I had a male Cavalier for almost 17 years who also sucked up his food. I
only found out because the day he had the last of his teeth taken out the vet
suggested a very soft diet for a day or two and also that it was likely he
would be unwilling to eat that night at all.

Well, Angus never quite took in what the vet was saying, because he pulled me
into the bar across the road for a pint of Guinness, which was his habit on
leaving the vets. After having that and arriving at home, I put down the
usual bowl of dried food in the hallway for the 2 daughters to eat for
dinner. Contrary to expectation, Angus immediately elbowed them out of the
way and scoffed the lot at record speed.

When I finally managed to get hold of him to have a look at what damage I
expected to find to his mouth, there was none. The obvious conclusion was
that he vacuumed his food down without chewing. The vet confirmed this when
I enquired, telling me that lots of dogs eat this way without any ill
effects. I think he ate that way for the last 3 or 4 years of his life.

I wonder if the trouble with your dog lies not in the method of eating, but
is linked to the content of the food for eating. Do you change the food for
variety for instance? Is there an allergy involved? Have you considered
some form of stress? You mention grass eating, has the grass been sprayed
with some chemical that may be causing the trouble?

Are you suffering some form of stress in your own life that she may be
picking up and getting stressed about it herself? Dogs are very good at
empathising with the emotions of their owners and if they aren't able to
understand what's going on, they become even more anxious.
