Hi Diane, I'm another one who would be surprised if wolfing down her food were the cause of her GI upsets. Dogs only chew food to soften, tear or break it so that it's no longer too hard or large to swallow. Remy eats chicken necks (plus veggie mix), and he chews the necks only to crunch some of the bones, but the neck still "looks" intact when he swallows it. One thing I observed with him early on (and I read a number of confirmations of this) - before I switched completely to the BARF diet -- is that *combining* kibble with raw (or, at least more natural) food in the same meal, causes stomach-upsets in many dogs. As little as a tablespoon shouldn't hurt, but if it's more than that, diarrhea is not unusual. So before you let the vet scope her, I'd suggest giving the ingredients in different meals several hours apart, e.g., kibble in one meal, tripe (or chicken, etc.) in a different meal. Hope this helps, and that you'll keep us posted. Alida Margolin
Subject: Re: Eating Habits Hello List - I am seeking some advice. I have a 3 year old who inhales food - literally. I give her kibble with something on top, like green tripe, chicken, venison etc. Problem is, she doesn't chew. She swallows, in about 30 seconds. This often results in stomach problems, diarrhea, sometimes eating grass and vomiting, not every day, but often enough that I have many different drugs and preparations in "the drawer" all for her. My vet wanted to scope her to see if she had irritable bowel disease the next time we do a dentistry, but I'm not of a mind to go to extremes. I think if there was just a way to get her to chew, most of these problems would be eliminated. Does anyone have any suggestions?
