Last spring I offered to whelp a litter for someone who had used my "Keeper."
She called me on Emily's 54th day to say that her aunt had died in Chicago
and she had to go for the funeral. I said it was okay to bring Emily to me,
but to get an x-ray first. The x-ray showed 2 puppies...she brought the
Emily 2 days later on the 56th day. The next morning I came downstairs and
thought she had peed in my sunroom but upon closer examination saw a dark
green/black color in the middle. I called Anne and said I thought that she
was aborting the puppies. She agreed, said there was nothing that could be
done but to call my vet. He agreed as well. I put her in an x-pen to keep
the others away from her and let her rest, but shortly thereafter noticed a
blob in the pen....it was a mummified fetus that weighed 1.3 ounces. About
an hour later I took her out and saw a smaller one in the grass (I think the
dogs might have been sniffing it but I remember it was shining as the sun hit
it.) I did not weigh that one since it was considerably smaller. I assumed
those were the 2 on the x-ray but made an appointment to take her to the vet
the next day for a check-up and antibiotics. I did not want to leave her
alone downstairs at night so I brought a crate into my bedroom and let her
sleep there. She woke me at 5 A.M. just because she was moving around a
bit....no noise. I asked if she wanted to go out and I took her downstairs
with a few others and let them out. I decided she was fine and left them
there since I was getting up shortly. I took her to the vet, checked out
clean...got a shot and all was fine. Her "mother" came for her around 4pm
and I went into my office. I came home at 7. My husband was reading in a
chair in the bedroom and we went to dinner. We came back, I made the dogs
dinner and called them. Nellie and Phoebe did not come. I sent Mark
upstairs and he called to tell me there was a dead puppy in the middle of the
bedroom....about 1 foot from his chair. This puppy was all cleaned off and
weighed 3.5 ounces. Obviously Emily had that puppy at 5 a.m. but I did not
see it in the dark. The crate was around my side of the bed and Mark could
not see it from his chair. What I assumed had happened was Nellie and Phoebe
found this baby and brought it out of the crate and cleaned it on my bedroom
floor. I do feel badly that perhaps I could have saved this puppy if I had
known it was there...but the x-ray showed only 2 (I guess the 2nd was too
small to show up.)
I called Anne the next day and asked how we could find out what had caused
this. She suggested the same thing she said here...C&S and Mycoplasm tests
sent to Cornell. Emily's owner did that and the results were that she was
loaded with micoplasm (I thought it was microplasm but I am copying what she
wrote...) As a precautionary measure, I decided to put all the dogs in my
house on an baytil, since they had all walked through the discharge, perhaps
smelled it and certainly Nellie and Phoebe had been with the one in my
bedroom. Almost $500 in pills & about $200 for tests (on one male and one
female) I am confident we have no problems, but I would not take the chance.
It was an expensive experience. That was last Spring and Emily was put on
Baytil just before she came into season recently and bred again with success.
Bu the way, my vet suggested Dicurel instead of Baytil which is less
expensive and you give half a pill once a day instead of 1 baytil twice a
day. Anyone have any opinion on Dicurel???

abort her litter as can pseudomonas. Early absorbtion of puppies can also be
due to progesterone levels falling too low, making the bitch's body think
that it is about to go into labor. Sometimes you see discharge and
sometimes you see nothing except a bitch that is deflating! If you are
curious, then I would take a C&S and Mycoplasma test on the discharge from
the whelping puppies. There are definite
procedures to checking for Mycoplasma which, if you end up doing this, I will
 go into for you.
 Hope this helps. Anne >>
