Susan I've had this happen both ways. While living in Northern California I had a first time bitch drop a puppy at 52 days. I immediately rushed her to the vet. This pup was not developed even for 52 days. It was more like 40 days in maturity. The vet assured me that she would probably hold on to the balance of the litter. He explained that this can happen. At that very moment, she dropped another puppy almost in his hand. So much for veterinary predictions. She had been ultra sounded with 5. She passed 3 and probably reabsorbed the other 2. The bitch's culture was negative for micro plasma or anything else.
A year later another bitch passed a "long dead" puppy at 57 days. She had the balance of the litter (perfectly healthy) at 61 days. Sometimes you just don't get an answer. I find the lack of a concrete cause to be the most difficult. Good luck. Patty Kanan TORLUNDY Camarillo, CA, USA > Hi, > I wanted to let you know about Esmee.
