> I have read over and over that doing a fresh chilled
semen breeding is very expensive. Why is that (or *is* it?) more expensive
than a natural breeding? Suppose I find a good boy across the country. I'm
going to do a natural breeding. First there is the stud dog's fee, then
round-trip airfare to get to him. Is that less expensive than the collected
specimen method?

Hi Laura:
One of the reasons for using fresh chilled is that the dog owner won't let
his dog be used "naturally", in order to make sure that no diseases are
passed. I just did the chilled process with my bitch, and it IS more
expensive. Shipping two boxes overnight FedEx, collection of the semen by
his vet, paying my vet to progesterone test two to three time ( I start
early on), having the transfer done, all adds up. Then of course, you have
the cost of the transfer containers, etc.
Every time I walk into his office, it is almost $100.00, but there is a lab
right in Lexington, and he sends one of his people right over with the test.
That way, I know that afternoon if we need the chilled the next day.
And, you can take into the whole cost (chilled or not) of having cultures
done on your bitch, just to be safe.
I talked with several people at the show in Louisville this weekend, and
found that many of us haven't had puppies, or have lost them due to who
knows what. So , obviously, I plan to do everything I can to produce a
wonderful, healthy litter.
