I wouldn't be surprised if this was eventually a recognized breed. (Well,
it is already recognized, but by only by the CKC) They have been breeding
them since the 70's -- the story is that the guy who started the breeding
program was trying for a non-shedding guide dog alternative. They even have
a breed standard, although I notice the size range is quite variable, and I
don't believe that they've managed to "fix" the non-shedding coat yet.

If you go to www.labradoodle.com you can read about their research/breeding
center. A quote from their site "Any genuine reputable breeder will have
there Labradors hip scored and will only breed with dogs below 20 and a
clear PRA with clear parentage of at least 3 generations on both sides of
the pedigree. Believe me it is incredibly hard to find Labradors anywhere in
the world that meet these guidelines but it is worth the search. Poodles
Also need to test clear of PRA and VW for at least 3 generations with hip
scores well below breed average. "
