Jan, You bring up good points. It is very difficult to explain to someone that when buying a dog, now is not the time to bargain hunt. They understand it after they get a dog with major problems. What can the breed clubs do? Any ideas? Anne Anne, Unfortunately after spending years talking with people about the value of a well bred dog-I am convinced that the average pet buyer does not understand. Think of how few people are really "involved" in purebred dogs. Very few. It takes years for most dog people to start to see the correct structure of a dog and how this adds to its' health. Pet buyers will learn to ask the health questions that pertain to a particular breed, and may find that the breeding stock is tested for this and that-important stuff-but do not understand that the dog's angles are so straight that it will be crippled at two from jogging with them. We can harp and harp "buy from a responsible breeder" of course "responsible" is a relative term. I think the problem can only be solved by not making the Cavalier such a desirable breed to sell. People can't help but see the $$$$. 5 puppies to sell at $2000.00 each. That's a lot of cash! I know the hobby of dogs costs a lot. I spend thousands a year campaigning, advertising, testing and caring for my dogs-and get nothing in return financially. No, I don't think Cavaliers should be cheap. And no, we can't have everything we want. Some things we can't afford. This is not the point. There are dog breeders out there that will get involved to make money, they will sell their puppies, and those are the dogs that will suffer. Did Cavaliers cost this much five years ago? I have talked to people in other breeds and their prices have not gone up considerably in the last few years. Is this a politically incorrect place to go?
