Carol, I recently read in Dog Watch newsletter put out by Cornell University that the average life span of any dog is 10 years of age. I want a high quality of life for my dogs and their owners so I seek out dogs known to be cardiology tested heart clear. I certainly would love for them to live to 19... but only if there is still joy in living. I think most breeders, with the exception of the obvious (backyard breeder, puppymill, broker, etc) we do the best we can using the suggested protocol to improve the longevity of our beloved cavalier. But like so many have said before, you must look at the "entire" dog not just the heart, or eyes, etc. Otherwise, you could start producing dogs that don't meet the breed standard resulting in not protecting or improving the breed.
I want to thank everyone who took the time to respond to my request for a whelping box, I am always amazed at the generosity this list provides when asked. I got so many choices and price ranges to choose from; you guys are great! I just pulled a very pregnant girl out from under the computer table; she got stuck! Thanks again.
