Winnie, By explaining the disease is poligenetic and every toy dog has the possibility of getting this disease in old age but in cavalier king charles spaniels it can appear under the age of 5. That breeders who follow the suggested breeding practice outlined by cardiologists have a higher probability of pushing the early age onset to later in the dogs life and perhaps, the dog may get early stage mitrialvalve disease but die from something entirely different. Or the dog may get the disease and go quickly. Each individual dog responds differently to the disease and there are medications to ease the symptoms and improve the quality of life but there is no cure.
